Charleston, S.C., February 17, 2010 – Through relationships with the University of Miami and Project Haiti, BERCHTOLD Corporation is sending surgical equipment to two Haitian cities, Port Au Prince and Pignon. The donations will assist medical teams providing care to individuals who were affected by the recent earthquake.

Surgical staff from the University of Miami, who recently set up a triage area and temporary operating space in Port Au Prince, found themselves working with no – or completely antiquated – equipment and reached out to BERCHTOLD Corporation. The medical manufacturer provided surgical lights equipped with mobile floor stands, which are scheduled to arrive in Haiti next week.

BERCHTOLD Corporation also shipped surgical lights and a surgical table to an existing hospital in Pignon, a city 70 miles away from Port Au Prince, where all orthopedic cases are performed. Project Haiti plans to offer continuous medical treatment at the Pignon hospital, 24 hours a day and seven days a week, for the next three months.

"Providing access to advanced medical technology is a crucial element in saving lives and treating the thousands of injured people in Haiti," said BERCHTOLD President Matthew Weismiller. "We are proud to meet this important need by providing BERCHTOLD surgical products to the hard-working medical teams who are making a difference for the Haitian people."
