Surgical Intervention to join in
Tuttlingen (Germany), July 29, 2010. Follow a two-and-a-half-hour surgical intervention without being on the OP table in person. This could be experienced by the visitors to the 11th European Congress for Child Surgery in the Congress Centre of Bern, June - live and in colour. The OP equipment provider BERCHTOLD, headquartered in Tuttlingen presented there its video transmission system ORICS (Operating Room Information and Communication System). That way the transmission could be made over the internet, in real time, from the island hospital of Bern. With help of the BERCHTOLD technology, the intervention was shown via video streaming to an exhibit stand in the lounge of the Congress Centre on a canvas screen. the OP team operated the ChromoVision mounted in the OP room to adjust or zoom in, for instance, image parts. Surgeon Dr. Theddy Slongo from the Bern Child Hospital addressed interested people from the OP room by microphone.
With ORICS, operations are transmitted live on the PC screen of the Real Time Telestrator within the OP room, as well as on PCs and screens outside. That way the operator can even receive visual instructions from the head physician or another specialist. The OP team is enabled to ask colleagues for advice via headsets if something unexpected is found. Moreover these findings can be quickly discussed in connection with experts, colleagues or students. ORICS can be installed quickly and easily on most of the computers. The video images can come from an OP camera, from the endoscope or another analogous device. The video material is available at any time and it is stored on external media or on the server.
The Congress, organized by the EUPSA (European Society for Child Surgery) took place from 2 to 5 June 2010, with roughly 800 participants in the Culture and Congress Centre of Bern. The EUPSA is the largest child surgery society worldwide with over 1200 members. Its goal is to offer an optimum specialization for child surgeons.
